What is Ballot Cure

We’ve all been very focused on Get Out the Vote in 2024. We also want to protect these votes that we worked so hard to turn out. In 2024, 34 states and Washington, DC allow for small mistakes on ballots to be fixed – called “ballot curing” – so that these votes can be counted. Ballot Cure is the process of helping voters who have had their ballot rejected by their local clerk for an issue with the signature or address on their absentee or mail-in ballot. If these voters do not take steps to fix or “cure” their ballots, their votes will not be counted! You can check state rules here.

What You’ll Be Doing

Ballot curing is like phonebanking. Volunteers call likely Democratic voters to notify them if their ballots have been rejected, and share with them how they can fix their ballot and ensure their vote is counted. Experts will walk you through all the basics of how Ballot Cure works. Volunteers get a short training and then you join a phonebank shift (many shifts available!). We are focused on ballot curing in key battleground states. Ballot curing phonecalls are very rewarding because you are contacting voters who have already voted and they really appreciate hearing from you that they have an opportunity to fix a problem and have their vote counted. Our only agenda is to ensure voters are able to cast their ballot and ensure it counts.

Some partners use an online platform that requires your computer; others use phones. No experience is necessary. Scripts are provided. Shifts most often start with a training.

Why It Matters

In 2020, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris won the Electoral College by just 44,000 votes in Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin. In 2016, Donald Trump lost the popular vote but won the Electoral College by about 80,000 votes in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. This year’s election is also projected to be very close. Ballot Cure volunteers play an integral role in ensuring thousands of likely Democratic votes are counted. Please join to help us make every vote count!
